Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I have ordered takeout from Mercato the past three nights. I first had the Alfredo and it was delicious along with the bread. The second night I had lobster ravioli, and tonight I had the lasagne. Every meal was excellent. Portions are decent... But maybe because I've only gotten takeout . I've convinced all my friends to try Mercato and they have all had great meals. Decor/Ambiance/and Service is great. WILL RECOMMEND TO ALL.

I am giving this place a 4 because food and overall vibe is most important to my dining experience. This place has good food, great decor, and an overall pleasant vibe. We had italian cheese plate and steak, total home run. Now the bad, the service in general (hostess, waitress, busboy) needs improvement. Nowadays good help is hard to find, but whoever is hiring needs to tighten this crew up. Overall, go to this spot. For my money its second to only Limoncello in the west chester italian scene.

All in all, A good experience and we have already decided what we will order next time. First, the service was great! Our server was charming, attentive, and timely (although somewhat lacking in his food knowledge) but forgiven because of his gracious demeanor! We started with the grilled calamari and arancini, the calamari was to die for and I must go back to get more sometime soon! The Arancini was forgettable, lacking in flavor across the board. Our entrees, New York strip, cooked to perfection, seasoned well and served hot, and veal involtini (a special) cooked perfectly, seasoned well and served hot and with a steak knife that I did not need to use because my veal was tender, as should be. I will return to taste the pizza, which looked awesome and of course more of that calamari (some of the best I have ever had).

Had an 8pm reservation for 6 on a Friday night. After waiting over 45 minutes (with no table looking close to being available) we finally left and went elsewhere. Biggest disappointment was managements attitude toward the large crowd of people jammed at the front door and crammed at the bar - they couldn't care less. Hopefully they will learn how to run this place correctly as the food is good, but the experience last night will keep us away for a long time.

Top reason for review: The waitress told us about a pasta special containing linguine, shrimp, and some other miscellaneous sauces and seafood. We ordered it and it was just okay, and was by no means a large dish. Definitely less than an entree.. Problem I had was that the pasta dishes were priced between $15-$20, and when we received the bill, the special was $28!! For the amount of food, taste, and the fact that the other similar dishes were about $10 cheaper, I find this unacceptable. Yes, we should've asked for the price before ordering, but I did not expect it to be that much more expensive, especially based on the portion size and bland taste. Atmosphere: 3. (had trouble figuring out what they were going for, it presents itself as an upscale Italian restaurant, but appears more to be a casual place to eat. Example: They had Family Guy and Seinfeld playing on a TV- not a big issue but a bit weird) Food. 2.5(For the price, not terrible but definitely bland, And of course, the special was not worth the price) Service. 3 (A bit slow, but being a new restaurant, I will give them credit) Conclusion: Probably would be a good lunch meal, but definitely not somewhere to go for dinner. Has a lot of potential, but I was not impressed at all.

I have been driving by Mercato every morning on my way to work for the past few months and have been patiently waiting for it to open. Last evening, my girlfriend and I decided to head over and grab few beers and a pizza at the bar to check it out. I have to say that I was significantly disappointed on multiple fronts. As others have referenced here, I paid $6 for an IPA on draft - which is very reasonable. However, the tall, skinny 10oz glasses they came in made me feel like I was being cheated. Since the standard pint draft pour is 16 ounces, it equates to paying almost $10 per beer. That's a bit steep. Our check ended up being 5 beers and a pizza for $46. I actually felt bad for the bartender, it seemed like it was her first time tending bar and she was completely overwhelmed...even though there were only 7 of us at the bar on a chilly Wednesday night. Every beer she poured seemed to come in a different glass, most of them emblazoned with the "Miller Lite" logo. Not exactly representative of the classy, upscale image they are attempting to portray. There was absolutely zero involvement from management even as it was clear that staff members needed direction and guidance. We noticed the owner but he seemed to be very disengaged and glued to his cell phone. There were also a few instances that made us cringe...a couple ordering dirty martinis that didn't have any olive juice in them...when they were sent back and panic ensued because the olive juice couldn't be found they used the juice that had been sitting in the drink condiment tray. A gentleman asking for the remainder of his pizza to go and a staff member using their hands to put it into the container. A broken glass right near food that was about to be served. You get the picture. Now, to be fair...I did overhear a number of staff members mentioning how employees had been "dropping like flies" so I am hopeful that I just caught them on a really bad night as they are transitioning between staff members. I did not experience much of the menu but I will say that the pizza we got was very good (although the crushed red pepper flakes I asked for came in a large shot glass with a spoon that many others have used before me). I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and plan to return in a few weeks to see if they are able to iron out some of the kinks.

It was my third time here, had 1 very good experience, 1 average, and this time, poor. If you've invested this much money in a brick oven, take the time to learn how to use it properly to make a pizza. The dough was undercooked, about the consistency of nan. Fire up the oven to 700 degrees, for God's sake, stretch the dough, and use better ingredients. The prosciutto tasted like boiled ham- too thick, no marbling. The barmaid was useless when I asked to bake it until crispy (it looks done?). When a pie came out for someone else at the bar, I noticed she took it back before serving it to a customer to the cook who looked at it, said a few words to her, and she took it back to the customer. I tried my best. The wait staff just hang out near the bathrooms on their cell phones, looking cool, but useless. We have a good selection of Italian restaurants in the WC area, this isn't one of them. It won't last is my prediction.

Excellent food. Menu was diverse. The options were familiar yet unique. Marscarpone crostini app was fantastic. Cool rustic atmosphere. Service was great. We'll be back.

Fantastic new restaurant in West Chester. Went with two couples on a Saturday Night. Gorgeous decor, reasonable prices, and friendly and professional staff. I highly recommend the hand made pastas, branzino, and brick oven pizza.

Great Experience for their soft opening (first night open) great food at a nice price point. Nice open feel with kitchen and large fire pizza oven. Needs to work on finishing bathrooms and adding a larger trash can.

The food was very good, our server, Ryan, was excellent. However, charging $10 for a "small" side dish of pasta is exorbitant, instead of substituting it for the 2 vegetables. The meatballs appetizer are the size of a hardball, and delicious. The price of a glass of wine, for the amount given is high, compared to other restaurants by about $2 a glass. And yes, the seating is rather "snug".

When a new Italian restaurant arrived in West Chester, we just had to try it. We arrived and really appreciated the interior design and exposed brick, classic West Chester look. We sat down and started with cocktails. The menu was simple and easy to understand. I do however wish their wine selection was a little bit bigger. We started with meatballs and a Caesar salad. Both great. We even ordered the cheese and meat board that was on special. I don't know if it looked or tasted better. Entrees were a simple clams and linguini dish in a light garlic sauce and seafood ravioli. Happy stomach and couple. Although the restaurant is newer, our server knew the menu and timed everything out with ease. The only negative: the bathrooms are in the same hallway where severs run food/ drop their dishes off to get cleaned. Inconvenient for everyone but definitely go and check it out. Just be careful when using the bathrooms.

Nice to have a new option in DubC. Went on 11/1 with my wife and 2 daughters. Menu is not dazzling, but food was quite good. Salads, crostini, a pizza, pasta and the special. Drinks are priced high ($12 for a martini!) but the food prices are pretty fair. This is shot across the bow at Tecca and pietros which are laughably overpriced. Only issue is the noise level. Extremely loud due to only hard surfaces and no where for sound to go. We all agreed it was deafening.

The food here is very good! But if you'd like a second drink or your food to come out quick this is not your place! I've been here twice and had the same issues with the service! Until they figure that out I won't be coming back! 2 stars is in recognition that the food is very good! If only the service could match!

Very loud and extremely busy. The tables are quite close together making it difficult to navigate to the bar to wait. At the bar, you are leaning over people to try to get a drink. Lighting was very low making it difficult to read the menu. Drinks were very pricey. $9.00 for Absolute and tonic! House wine $7.50 each which is about average, but still ridiculous. They were out of both Coors and Amstel light but took 15 minutes to find this out? Food was over all good. Had the special crab ravioli which was delicious. The lasagna however was a huge disappointment. Arrived in a bowl, very dry, and filled with breadcrumbs and pasta... no meat or cheese to speak of. Was disappointed not to see any veal dishes at all on the menu. Appetizers were varied and very good. Prices were moderate to high. Seemed as if they had not expected the crowd they had, although I made reservations that they called to confirm that afternoon. Very difficult for the wait staff to work due to the closeness of the tables. Might need some more people?? Would think about returning for lunch to try the pizza, or on a weeknight perhaps. The crowded conditions and noise really took away from the experience.

The four of us went to dinner last night. Our good friends had never been here before and wanted to see West Chester's newest Italian restaurant. Excellent experience. Although we usually eat at the bar, this time because there were four of us, we enjoyed comfortable table in dining room. We had brick chicken, lasagna, Chilean sea bass and branzino. All wonderfully prepared, coupled with excellent service. Highly recommend.

SALT! People! It helps enhance the flavor of food. We ordered the fried artichokes looked exceptional, but no flavor out of any of the 3 dipping sauces & the artichokes needed to be salted after coming out of the fryer. We also ordered the ceaser salad, it was def a homemade dressing & actually had a good flavor but could have used? Salt! The fried long hots came out, who the heck eats those w/o bread? We had to ask for it, even though we had ordered food, no bread was brought to the table, we had to ask for it. The short rib pasta dish was really good! Kudos! (I had to add salt, lol!). My son wanted pizza & since we make wood fired pizza @ home, we always want to try & compare others to ours. We asked for a well done margharita pizza. The pizza looked good but was not well done. There was a mix up w/the olive oil & truffle oil bottles bc my pizza had truffle oil on it. I told the waiter, he smelled my pizza & agreed. Then it was the discussion amongst the staff. I KNOW what truffle oil tastes like, I don't like mushrooms, it's a very obvious flavor. It was not taken off the check, big mistake. We had wine w/dinner, the pours on these large glasses makes you feel robbed. Either get smaller glasses or charge a little more & give a heartier pour. The restaurant is beautiful & we were excited about dining there. We may possibly give them another chance.

I've been going to Alfredo in Berwyn since it opened. I like the exposed brick decor, and always get my corner table by the window. It's convenient when meeting people for a casual dinner in-between home and the city. I didn't know how I was on Mercato's email list until I saw the webpage which branded it as "Mercato by Alfredo of Berwyn." The webpage featured a picture that looked like a tab "now featuring our fall menu', but when you try to click on it nothing happens, so you're not able to preview the menu online. I looked for the restaurant on Open Table as I use it to book at Alfredo but they aren't listed, come to find they use Yelp's system. Arriving at 6:30 Sunday almost every table except three were taken. The bar was full. Our reservation was honored without wait, unlike, cough* Limoncello cough*. The service was good, very attentive but anxious and hurried, yet didn't make us feel rushed. We were watered but bread didn't come immediately. The waiter asked if we'd like drinks which were declined he noticed we didn't have bread, then asked if we'd like it and that he'd grab it for us, came back to ask if we'd prefer olive oil. Once returned asked if we were ready to order when I asked him if there were any additions to the menu, he quickly and apologetically read them from his book. There was someone shadowing him that he, (I hope), was training. After reading the specials we asked for a minute. We ordered the asparagus app and the arincini, I orderd a gnocchi special and my company the papperadelle. The menu is similar to Avalon in that they are listed in courses, unlike Avalon I did not see a pre fixe or pairing menu. Avalon also prices a smaller plate and entree size, there was only one price per plate here. We opted for the apps and pasta and forewent the entree and salads. The bread was good though balsamic was in the oil, I order it tabled to add your own, no big deal, if that's how they do it I'll live. The arincini was prepared well and had good flavor but was not hot, some bites were cold. The marinara was very good. The asparagus was different but enjoyable, it didn't need the runny egg on it but was still good. Not impressed yet. Honestly I only ordered the gnocchi because originally I though he said it was a ravioli special, I misheard him and since I didn't want to make him come back, ordered the gnocchi, which, God forgive me, I really don't like. I actually enjoyed it. It was very good, I didn't finish it all because remember, I don't like gnocchi. My company enjoyed the papperadelle and was very pleased. Redemption! I ordered coffee and dessert the dessert menu was quite limited, only four options. I have a feeling that's because I think the desserts are actually made in house from the taste of them. (incidentally, I saw the owner of Yori's bakery a few tables away, hope he wasn't looking for a customer.) Bread pudding was a dessert special this evening, the waiter mentioned. I quipped, "you get that many old people here?" The waiter boasted, "yes we do!" Only two desserts on the menu did not have alcohol one of which was the pumpkin cheesecake. Honestly I am not impressed with pumpkin anything this time of year, ooh, sugar cinnamon and nutmeg, feh. So I ordered the pumpkin cheesecake (insert LOL), It was actually good. It was topped with pecans ( I think, could've been sugar smacks for all I know) and a caramel drizzle, The top was a little too sugary but if you mixed it together with the center it balanced out well. All and all, I'm going back. Like I said the entrées redeemed the apps, the service really tried hard and they were very busy for being new, I think once they get in the vibe they'll be fine. This is a place in West Chester I want to like. I will stop back within two weeks to give it another shot. To sum it up You're not leaving hungry, I don't know that I would've been able to fit an entrée, I would have to omit the pasta dish if I were to order an entrée in the future. Everyone in the place seemed to be enjoying themselves and the place did smell wonderful. Somewhat difficult layout entering & exiting the bar area for as crowded as it was. Two appetizers, two pasta dishes, one dessert and coffee $70. (w/o tip or booze), A little pricey but better quality than some of the other places in town although I don't know that everyone will recognize and appreciate that difference, I hope they will.

A very uneven night. As others have written, our are experience upon entering was very awkward.we had reservations. The other couple that we were dining with was not there yet. We told The hostess and the owners wife the name. After a very long and awkward staring and silence at a computer screen, my wife finally asked if we should just wait at the bar. they said yes. The room is over-the-top loud. Tables are extremely close. So close that diners and servers have trouble navigating the room. It was very difficult. I mean very very difficult to have a conversation. The housemade bread was disappointing. The bottom was hard and crusty but the top and center was very soft. Almost as if it wasn't cooked long enough. The mussels were the highlight of the appetizers. The fried artichokes had much too much breading. The grilled octopus and long hot peppers were very mediocre. My wife and I both had the scallops for an entrée. They were very good. On a bed of broccoli Robe and puréed black beans. But $20 for three medium sized scallops? We split the chocolate Grenache dessert. It was fantastic. Oddly though, they do not serve decaf coffee.I asked our server for a Sambuca He looked at me puzzled and asked if I wanted a shot. I looked at him back puzzled. And said the bartender should know how to serve a sambuca. I was wrong. Out came a shot of Sambuca in a double Manhattan glass, not chilled, no coffee beans. They definitely still have kinks to work out, That could make the dining experience much better. Because overall the food was very good.

Get your crap together. When opening a new restaurant - have your stuff together before you open. If you are not ready wait a few weeks and get everything strait before you let the public in. Pros *Atmosphere - 10 out of 10 - The place has a great feel to it. *Cesar Salad - 10 out of 10 Cons *Service was poor *Server forgot to bring us our alcohol (waited up to 15 - 20 minutes) *Pizza was served cold - I am sure it's good but C'mon *Took server a year to bring us our bill There are too many other good Italian restaurant options in West Chester to only be mediocre. For the price there are 3 better food and service options right down the street. I will not go back anytime soon. First impressions are extremely important. That being said, I am a local and I do support Mom and Pop shops. I will try them again down the line. If my experience doesn't change I probably will not go back.
(2)Matt M.
Great food selection snd quality. Above average beer selection - draft and bottles. Cool atmosphere and decor. Friendly knowledgable staff. Reasonably priced.
(5)Bob M.
Have only had dinner at the bar. Service was strained. Pasta serving was over priced as other local quality italian places give you more than twice the serving. But the biggest disappointment was not having standard condiments to improve the hamburger. Pretentious to assume the burger didn't need help.
